Breathing Patterns in Brain Injury

  • Types
  • Neurologic Lesion Related Breathing Patterns
  1. Normal
    1. Regular respirations at 12 to 16 breaths/minute in adults (see Breathing Rate)
  2. Cerebral Lesions (Cheyne-Stokes Respiration)
    1. Alternating hyperpnea and apnea at regular intervals (30 second to 2 minute cycles)
    2. Smooth waxing and waning in depth of respiration
  3. Midbrain lesions
    1. Rapid Breathing Rate
  4. Pons lesions
    1. Slow, gasping or agonal breaths
  5. Medulla lesions
    1. Irregular in both Breathing Rate and depth
