  • Mechanism
  1. As with other azoles, inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol (key component of fungal cell wall)
    1. Blocks sterol 14-a-dimethylase (microsomal Cytochrome P450-dependent enzyme)

  1. Precautions
    1. Bayer Healthcare uses the Lotrimin brand name to apply to various Antifungals (e.g. Miconazole, Butenafine)
  2. Oral Candidiasis
    1. Clotrimazole 10 mg troche (Mycelex)
  3. Topical Antifungals
    1. Clotrimazole Cream 1%
    2. Clotrimazole Solution 1%
  4. Vaginal Antifungals
    1. Clotrimazole 1 to 2% vaginal creams
    2. Clotrimazole 100, 200 and 500 mg vaginal tablets
  • Dosing
  1. Oral Candidiasis (Thrush) in Adults and children over age 3 years
    1. Treatment
      1. Dissolve one troche (10 mg) slowly in mouth five times daily for 14 days
    2. Prevention in Immunocompromised patients
      1. Dissolve one troche (10 mg) slowly in mouth three times daily
      2. Continue until Chemotherapy or high dose Corticosteroid course is completed
  2. Topical (Dermatophyte Infection or Superficial Candida infection) for adults and children
    1. Apply twice daily to affected area
  3. Yeast Vaginitis (Gyn-Lotrimin, Mycelex G)
    1. Clotrimazole 1% cream at bedtime for 7 days
    2. Clotrimazole 2% cream at bedtime for 3 days
    3. Clotrimazole 200 mg vaginal tab PV at at bedtime for 3 days
    4. Clotrimazole 100 mg vaginal tab PV at bedtime for 7 days
    5. Clotrimazole 500 mg vaginal tab PV at bedtime for 1 dose
