Butenafine, Mentax

  • Mechanism
  1. Naphthalenemethylamine derivative (similar to Terbinafine)
  • Indications
  1. Refractory cutaneous Tinea Infections (e.g. Tinea Pedis, Tinea Cruris)
  • Dosing
  1. Apply once daily for 14 days to a 2 cm area surrounding Skin Infection
  2. Note: Unlike other Topical Antifungals, once daily application is sufficient
  • Advantages
  1. Shorter course (2 instead of 4 weeks) than Clotrimazole
  2. More convenient (once daily) than other Topical Antifungals
  • Disadvantages
  1. Expensive
  • Efficacy
  1. High tinea cure rates with a 2 week course
  2. At 4-8 weeks, no significant difference in cure as compared with Clotrimazole
