Cefixime, Suprax

  • Contraindications
  1. Staphylococcus aureus infection (poor activity)
  • Medications
  1. Capsules: 400 mg
  2. Chewable Tablets: 100 or 200 mg (contain Phenylalanine)
  3. Suspension: 100 or 200 mg/5ml and 500 mg/5 ml
    1. Stable at room Temperature for 2 weeks
  • Dosing
  1. Adult (or child age >13 years, weight > 45 to 50 kg)
    1. Standard Dosing
      1. Take 400 mg orally divided once daily
    2. Gonorrhea
      1. Take 400 mg orally for single dose
  2. Child (age <13 years or weight < 45 to 50 kg)
    1. Standard Dosing
      1. Give 8 mg/kg/day divided daily to twice daily
    2. Febrile Urinary Tract Infection
      1. Give 16 mg/kg orally on day 1, then 8 mg/kg/day daily for 14 days
  3. Renal Dosing
    1. eGFR 21 to 60 ml/min (or Hemodialysis): Decrease usual dose to 75%
    2. eGFR <20 ml/min (or Peritoneal Dialysis): Decrease usual dose to 50%
  • Safety
  1. Pregnancy Category B
  2. Safe in Lactation
  • Drug Interactions
  1. Warfarin
    1. Cefixime may increase INR
  2. Carbamazepine
    1. Cefixime may increase Carbamazepine levels
