Contraceptive Selection in Diabetes Mellitus

  • Indications
  • Highly effective Contraception where pregnancy risk is too high
  1. Poorly controlled diabetes (increased risk of major Congenital Anomaly)
  2. Severe macrovascular and microvascular complications
  • Management
  1. Oral Contraceptives with low-dose Estrogen and less androgenic Progestin
    1. Avoid in vascular disease or microvascular disease, or in Diabetes Mellitus >20 years
  2. Intrauterine Device (Copper-T IUD or Levonorgestrel IUD)
  3. Progestin-Only Pill (lower efficacy)
  4. Avoid Depo Provera
