  1. Diazo-Bonded 5-ASA product
  2. Olsalazine is a prodrug that is retained in the colon and metabolized to 5-Aminosalicylic Acid
    1. Oral agent converted to active 5-ASA (Mesalamine) by Bacteria within the colon
  • Dosing
  • Adult
  1. Induction: 1.5 to 3 g/day divided twice daily
  2. Maintain: 500 mg orally twice daily with food
    1. As of 2022, >$1500/month
  • Adverse Effects
  1. Diarrhea (17 to 20%)
    1. Balsalazide has similar mechanism of action, but less Diarrhea (better tolerated)
