Acute Labyrinthitis, Viral Labyrinthitis

  • Etiologies
  • Infection
  1. Viral Labyrinthitis
    1. Mumps most common etiology (Vertigo uncommon)
  2. Bacterial Labyrinthitis (uncommon)
    1. Due to extension of Otitis Media or Cholesteatoma
  • Pathophysiology
  1. Not synonymous with Vestibular Neuronitis
  2. Local spread from middle ear infection or Meningitis
  3. Causes permanent damage to Cochlea, vestibular system
  • Symptoms
  1. Vertigo is variably present
  2. Tinnitus may be present
  3. Severe and total Sensorineural Hearing Loss
    1. Distinguishes Labyrinthitis from Vestibular Neuronitis
  • Signs
  1. Nystagmus
  2. Ear exam normal
