Lip Exam

  • Signs
  1. Look at upper and lower lips
  2. Observe skin and vermilion borders
  3. Observe for:
    1. Symmetry, color, and texture
    2. Pigment change
    3. Keratosis
    4. Atrophy
    5. Subsurface abnormalities
      1. Induration or swelling
      2. Ulceration
      3. Blistering
  • Findings
  1. Lip Ulceration (Suspicious for Lip Cancer)
  2. Lip Vesicles
    1. Herpes Simplex (Cold Sore, Fever Blister)
  3. Lip Fissures
    1. Angular Stomatitis or Cheilosis (Perleche)
    2. Cheilitis
  4. Lip Pigmented Lesions
    1. Mucous Retention Cyst (Mucocele)
    2. Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome
      1. Pigmented lesions ("Freckles") on lips that crosses vermilion border
      2. Pigmented lesions are also found on the Buccal mucosa, periorbital face, hands and fingers
  5. Lip Swelling
    1. Angioedema
