  1. Comatose patient with suspected Brainstem injury
  • Contraindications
  1. Possible Cervical Spine Injury
  • Technique
  1. Eyes open
  2. Head is rotated briskly from side to side
  • Interpretation
  1. If Brainstem intact:
    1. Eyes move opposite to head movement (keeps focus despite head movement)
    2. Eyes deviate contralaterally, looking away from rotation
  2. If Brainstem injury:
    1. Eyes follow direction of head rotation, staying fixed in orbits and not keeping focus
