Drug Resistance in Pneumonia Score, DRIP Score

  • Indications
  1. Identify Pneumonia patients at risk for multi-drug resistance (esp. Healthcare Associated Pneumonia or HCAP)
  • Criteria
  • Major (assign 2 points for each positive)
  1. Antibiotic Use in the last 60 days
  2. Residence in a Long-Term Care Facility
  3. Tube Feeding
  4. Prior drug resistant Pneumonia in the last year
  • Criteria
  • Minor (assign 1 point for each positive)
  1. Hospitalization in the last 60 days
  2. Chronic pulmonary disease
  3. Poor functional status
  4. Gastric acid suppression (H2 Blocker or Proton Pump Inhibitor for at least 2 weeks)
  5. Wound care
  6. MRSA colonization in the last year
  • Interpretation
  1. Total 2 points for each positive major criteria, and 1 point for each minor criteria (total 14 possible)
  2. Score <4 does not require broad spectrum Antibiotics for Pneumonia hospital admissions
