  1. Gram Positive, aerobic, nonmotile rods
  2. Previously categorized in the genus Corynebacterium
  3. Natural sources
    1. Soil
    2. Manure
    3. Animal hosts (Cattle, Sheep, Deer, Bears, Dogs, Cats)
  4. Immunocompromised patients (acquired via inhalation)
    1. HIV Infection (see Pulmonary Manifestations of HIV)
    2. Organ transplant recipients
  • Findings
  1. Necrotizing Pneumonia
    1. Upper lung lobe Nodules, infiltrates
    2. Upper lung lobe cavitary lesions with air fluid levels (distinguishes from Tuberculosis)
    3. Pleural Effusion
