Contraceptive Diaphragm Cleaning, Diaphragm Cleaning, Cervical Cap Cleaning

  • Indications
  1. Cleaning fitting contraceptive devices in clinic
    1. Cleans Diaphragm and Cervical Caps between patients
  2. Not for cleaning these devices at home
    1. Patients may use warm soapy water to clean
  1. Scrub thoroughly in liquid detergent and water OR
  2. Soak in liquid soapy solution after use
  3. Use one of the three sterilization methods below
  • Technique
  • Cleaning Method 1 - Autoclave
  1. Temperature: 121 degrees Celsius, 15 PSI
  2. Time: 20 minutes unwrapped or 30 minutes wrapped
  3. Drying: Allow to air dry (Do NOT use dry cycle)
  4. Storage: in container until use
  • Technique
  • Cleaning Method 2 - Bleach (e.g. Clorox)
  1. Soak in 1:10 dilution bleach for 30 minutes
  2. Rinse thoroughly under Running tap water
  3. Soak in 70% Isopropyl Alcohol for 15 minutes
  4. Rinse thoroughly under Running tap water
  5. Allow to air dry and store in container until use
  • Technique
  • Cleaning Method 3 - Cidex (Glutaraldehyde)
  1. Other cleaning methods are preferred
    1. Causes deterioration of latex
    2. Cidex is hazardous to use in office setting
  2. Ensure adequate ventilation
  3. Immerse in 2% Cidex solution for 20 minutes
  4. Rinse and place in boiling water for 30 minutes
  5. Allow to air dry and store in container until use
