  • Beighton Score Exam - One Point for each of 9 criteria
  1. Passively dorsiflex fifth metacarpophalangeal joint (MCP joint) >90 degrees
    1. Score 1: Right Side
    2. Score 1: Left Side
  2. Oppose thumb to volar Forearm
    1. Score 1: Right Side
    2. Score 1: Left Side
  3. Hyperextend elbow >10 degrees
    1. Score 1: Right Side
    2. Score 1: Left Side
  4. Hyperextend knee >10 degrees
    1. Score 1: Right Side
    2. Score 1: Left Side
  5. Bend forward with knees fully extended, and place hands flat on floor
    1. Score 1: Bend Forward
  • Criteria
  • Five Point Hypermobility Questionnaire (adjunctive if inadequate points on exam)
  1. Can you place your hands flat on floor without bending your knees (now or ever in past)?
  2. Can you bend your thumb to touch your Forearm (now or ever in past)?
  3. As a child, could you do "splits" or contort your body into strange shapes?
  4. As a child or teen, did your Shoulder or knee cap (Patella) dislocate more than one time?
  5. Do you consider yourself double jointed?
  • Interpretation
  • Generalized Joint Hypermobility Diagnosis
  1. Prepubertal children or teens
    1. Beighton Score >= 6 or
    2. Beighton Score >= 5 AND two or more questions positive on Five Point Questionnaire
  2. Postpuberty teens to age 50 years old
    1. Beighton Score >= 5 or
    2. Beighton Score >= 4 AND two or more questions positive on Five Point Questionnaire
  3. Age over 50 years old
    1. Beighton Score >= 4 or
    2. Beighton Score >= 3 AND two or more questions positive on Five Point Questionnaire
