Posterior Night Splint

  • Indications
  1. Plantar Fasciitis refractory to basic measures
  • Mechanism
  1. Keeps foot in maximal dorsiflexion
  2. May be uncomfortable if >90 degrees
  3. May interfere with sleep
  • Preparation
  1. Layer 4" dry Fiberglass Casting material into 12 plies
    1. Length to extend between high calf and proximal toes
  2. Put Casting material inside tube gauze
  3. Apply material to foot and leg
  4. Maximize dorsiflexion
    1. Patient may hold tube gauze to dorsiflex foot
  5. Apply soaked ace wrap around splint
  6. Remove ace wrap when splint hardened
  • Efficacy of Posterior Night Splints
  1. Relieved symptoms of 16 out of 16 patients (n=32)
  2. Placebo: 6 of 17 control patients improved
  3. Average time to healing: 12.5 weeks
