Triclabendazole, Egaten

  • Indications
  1. Fascioliasis
    1. LiverFluke or Flatworm Infection
  • Mechanism
  1. Synthetic benzimidazole derivative
  2. Inhibits Helminth (worm) reproduction and survival
    1. Blocks microtubule formation (polymerization) in cytoplasm
    2. Blocks Glucose uptake and depletes Helminth glycogen stores
    3. Results in reduced ATP and Helminth death
  • Medications
  1. Triclabendazole 250 mg tablets
    1. May be taken whole or divided
    2. May be crushed and mixed with apple sauce (take within 4 hours)
  • Dosing
  • Adult (and child age >=6 years)
  1. Triclabendazole 10 mg/kg orally with food every 12 hours for 2 doses
  • Adverse Effects
  1. QTc Prolongation
  2. Abdominal Pain or Biliary Colic
  3. Headaches
  • Safety
  1. Unknown safety in pregnancy
  2. Unknown safety in Lactation
