Nitazoxanide, Alinia

  • Indications
  1. Giardiasis (Diarrheal illness)
  2. Cryptosporidiosis (Diarrheal Illness)
    1. May also be used off-label in Cryptosporidiosis with comorbid HIV Infection (on HAART)
  • Mechanism
  1. Synthetic benzamide
  2. Antiprotozoal agent blocks anaerobic Energy Metabolism
    1. Pyruvate ferredoxin oxidoreductase (PFOR enzyme) dependent electron transfer
    2. Activity against Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium parvum
  • Medications
  1. Tablet: 500 mg
  2. Suspension: 100 mg/5 ml
    1. May be stored at room Temperature for up to 7 days
    2. Contains 1.5 g sucrose per 5 ml (teaspoon)
  1. Adult (and child >=12 years)
    1. Nitazoxanide 500 mg orally twice daily with food for 3 days
  2. Child
    1. Age 1 to 3 years: 100 mg orally twice daily with food for 3 days
    2. Age 3 to 11 years: 200 mg orally twice daily with food for 3 days
    3. Age >=12 years: Use adult dose

  1. Unknown safety in pregnancy
  2. Unknown safety in Lactation
  • Adverse Effects
  1. Urine will appear bright yellow orange (pyridium-like effect)
