Moxidectin, Milbemycin B

  • Indications
  1. Onchocerciasis (age 12 years and older)
  • Mechanism
  1. Avermectin Antiparasitic and antihelminth agent similar to Ivermectin
  2. Greater use in veterinary rather than human medicine (beyond its indication for Onchocerciasis)
  • Medications
  1. Tablets: 2 mg
  • Dosing
  • Adults (and Children age >12 years old)
  1. Take 8 mg (four tablets) orally for one dose
    1. Drug levels persist for months after dose

  1. Unknown safety in pregnancy

  1. Orthostatic Hypotension
  2. Encephalopathy
    1. Occurs with coinfection with Loa loa
    2. Evaluate for Loa loa prior to treatment
  3. Onchodermatitis exacerbation
    1. Associated with hyperreactive Onchodermatitis (Sowda)

  • Mazzotti Reaction (Immunologic Reaction in Onchocerciasis to Parasite Death)
  1. Nausea
