Recurrent Parotitis of Childhood

  • Epidemiology
  1. Limited to pre-pubertal children
  • Symptoms
  1. Recurrent, episodic Parotid Gland swelling and pain
  2. Prodromal symptoms
    1. Fever
    2. Malaise
  • Signs
  1. Parotid Gland tenderness and swelling
  2. Unilateral in most cases (but can be bilateral)
  • Management
  1. Hydration
  2. Parotid Gland massage
  3. Warm compresses to parotid region
  4. Lemon drops and other sialagogues
  5. Antibiotics (e.g. Augmentin, Clindamycin)
  6. Otolaryngology consult
    1. Sialendoscopy may be indicated
