  • Indications
  1. Thick, dry, itchy Plaques (hyperkeratotic lesions)
  2. Areas often rubbed off by patients
  • Contraindications
  1. Avoid on lesions in hairy areas
  2. Avoid in intertriginous areas (inguinal or axillary region or in gluteal crease)
    1. Risk of Superficial Folliculitis or maceration
  • Advantages
  1. Inert: allergic dermatitis less likely than cream
  2. Most potent vehicle of the Preparation Bases (due to most Occlusion)
  3. More lubrication than other Preparation Bases
  • Adverse Effects
  1. Feels greasy and may have lower compliance rates (use at bedtime)
  2. May occlude Hair Follicles more than less occlusive Preparation Bases (such as Topical Lotions)
  • Pharmacology
  1. Topical Steroid ointments are more potent than creams
    1. Ointment vehicle holds steroid to skin surface
