Tolnaftate, Tinactin

  • Indications
  1. Superficial dermatophyte infections (e.g. Tinea Pedis, Tinea Cruris, Tinea Corporis)
    1. Other Topical Antifungals are preferred (primarily fungistatic rather than fungicidal)
  • Mechanism
  1. Naphthalene (2 ring Hydrocarbon extracted from Coal Tar) and Thiocarbamate derivative
  2. Primarily fungistatic (as opposed to fungicidal), leaving it less effective at resolution than other Antifungals
    1. Other Topical Antifungals are preferred
  3. Selective, reversible and non-competitive inhibitor of membrane-bound squalene-2,3- epoxidase
    1. Inhibits ergosterol synthesis, a key component in fungal cell walls
  4. Also impairs mycelial growth and results in distorted hyphae
  • Medications
  1. Tolnaftate 1% available OTC in U.S. in creams, solutions, powders, gels and sprays
  1. Apply twice daily

  1. Unknown safety in pregnancy
  2. Unknown safety in Lactation
