  • Indications
  1. Superficial dermatophyte infections (e.g. Tinea Pedis, Tinea Cruris, Tinea Corporis)
  2. Cutaneous Candidiasis
  • Contraindications
  1. Not FDA approved in children
  • Mechanism
  1. Imidazole Antifungal
  2. As with other azoles, inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol (key component of fungal cell wall)
    1. Blocks sterol 14-a-dimethylase (microsomal Cytochrome P450-dependent enzyme)
  3. Other activity specific to Econazole
    1. Endogenous respiration inhibitor
    2. Purine uptake inhibitor
    3. Phospholipid synthesis inhibitor

  1. Cream: 1%
  2. Foam: 1%
  • Dosing
  • Superficial dermatophyte infections and Candidiasis
  1. Apply once daily for dermatophyte infections for 2 weeks (4 weeks for Tinea Pedis)
  2. Apply twice daily for Cutaneous Candidiasis for 2 weeks

  1. Pregnancy Category C
  2. Unknown safety in Lactation

  1. Unlikely Drug Interactions given minimal absorption
  2. Warfarin
    1. May increase INR
