Oral Erythroplakia, Erythroplakia, Erythroplasia, Speckled Leukoplakia, Erythroleukoplakia

  • Epidemiology
  1. Much less common than Leukoplakia
  2. More predictive of neoplasm than Leukoplakia
    1. 90% of early carcinomas appear as Erythroplakia (severe dysplasia, carcinoma in situ or carcinoma)
  1. Red, velvet-like lesion (smooth or pebbly surface)
  2. Speckled Leukoplakia (Erythroleukoplakia) may also be present
    1. White patches on periphery of Erythroplakia
  • Differential Diagnosis
  1. Epithelial dysplasia
  2. Squamous Cell Carcinoma
  • Management
  1. Biopsy if lesion persists >2 weeks
  • Prevention
